About this deal

Sixteen-year-old Tiger Tolliver’s struggles are relatively minor—she’s stuck in secondhand threads and lusts after her biology partner—until her overprotective but loving mother unexpectedly dies. We didnt need the ranch scene, especially since it did very little to show her mother’s love of horses. I think most readers will find the immediate removal of any agency from the teenager just as jarring as Tiger herself does. How to Make Friends with the Dark is a gorgeously nuanced meditation on grief and family, and the incredible love that can pull you through the darkest of times.

Mom's been on the couch since yesterday morning, cocooned in a black-and-red wool blanket, sleeping off a headache. But for my money on a book on grief, I’d go with Mick Harte Was Here (a middle grade but still really good), or Stealing Kevin’s Heart. Just when Tiger feels she can no longer bear the way her life is managed, the unimaginable happens and her mother dies.honestly, i can’t think of any character i have so genuinely sympathized with so quickly, and i’ve got the author’s great writing to thank for that. We meet Tiger Tolliver at her most broken--at her darkest moment--and yet, somehow, How To Make Friends With the Dark teaches us how to let the light in. How to Make Friends with the Dark takes you on a wild ride from a normal school day with the hopes of kissing your crush to literally the worst moment for anyone to go through: identifying your mother's body in a morgue.

The plot takes an unexpected turn and the latter half of the book becomes about how to keep going on despite an enormous hole in your heart through friendship and discovering a new family relationship when Tiger finds out she has an older sister, a sister who represents adults who do their best to make lives of these poor children a bit better.Tiger obsesses over the last words she screamed to her mom, “Why can’t you ever just fucking leave me alone? Jugendstrafsystem in den USA, Mobbing an Schulen, Alkohol-/ und Drogenabhängigkeit, Obdachlosigkeit, Armut, Suizid, sowie Gewalt an Kindern und Jugendlichen angesprochen und damit muss man erstmal zurechtkommen. It is important to get to know about them, they are there and for many people a reality even if it can be hard to acknowledge that.

I received a copy of this book to promote on Instagram, but I was interested in the book before the promotion and so I read it right away. The themes of grief, anger and isolation are tackled so sensitivity and the characters feel so real that you end up hurting for them. We meet Tiger Tolliver at her most broken—at her darkest moment—and yet, somehow, How to Make Friends with the Dark teaches us how to let the light in. It's written mostly from the author's personal experience and I have so much respect and adoration for the author. She feels like an island floating out to sea in darkness she alone can feel surrounded by smiling happy faces. There is very little light down there and Glasgow doesn’t shy away from the ugly places grief sometimes takes us.
