About this deal

Through short anecdotes/essays detailing the Beasties Boys (beginnings, middles, and unfortunately, ending) this is really the story of three punk rock boys, using NYC as their playground and what they accomplished.

I’ve follow the boys since ‘87 and was fortunate to meet Adrock and Mike D at the London book signing, I read the book and bought the audio version too.But really, all of them did a fantastic job and a lot of times they were laughing right along with the stories or Mike D would cut in on Ad-Rock's story and vice versa. The book is a beautiful tribute to the long-lasting friendship of the "boys" and their departed bandmate, Adam Yauch (MCA). In addition to Diamond and Horovitz, there’s a full cast of narrators that will blow your damned mind.

The literary equivalent of the band's classic third album, Check Your Head: sprawling, eclectic, irreverent, clever, hyper and cool, driven by the engaging home-brewed DIY ethic which for over 30 years defined the trio's approach to creativity. So whenever he got thirsty or hungry he'd get up, do the reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaach to the fridge and show all his bits before getting back into the tub. The contents of the final chapters--and what's absent from them--will stick with me for a long time. Adam “AD-ROCK” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album Licensed to Ill; that album’s messy fallout; their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul’s Boutique.Next I downloaded the eReader version from my library to check out the pictures referenced throughout. In a recent interview they admitted to be uncomfortable dealing with the past, preferring the present and future. Reilly, Ian Rogers, Maya Rudolph, Rev Run, Luc Sante, Kate Schellenbach, MC Serch, Chloe Sevigny, Jon Stewart, Ben Stiller, Wanda Sykes, Jeff Tweedy and Philippe Zdar. Really evocative descriptions help transport you to that place and time, it's certainly the best part of the book. But then the story got better because Ad-Rock goes on to say how he was scarred for life since every time he went over to their apartment he'd seem to catch Mike D in the bath.

And one album away from MCA issuing his famous apology for “the disrespect to women” to “the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends. The guy's making soup and talks about making the soup more than the album and Will delivers it deadpan.

As Spike says, 'these three friends are magic' and you can feel their creativity and playfulness as you read. However, the book is a lot like their albums-some songs speak to you, some don't, some are weird and some you're like.I gotta tell you, though, I legit lost my shit when I heard Wanda Sykes' voice come through my speakers. Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band … With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir . Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys' New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises.
