About this deal

This fascinating technique is one we thought worth exploring so let’s visit the Art Studio at Collingwood where our very own Miss Blake has created a series of short videos which explain the technique and makes it easy for you to enter the world of Eric Carle.

His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them. Eric Carle (1929 – 2021) was an author, designer and illustrator, and the creator of some of the world's most loved children's books. At the time of creating, AccessArt checked all links to ensure content is appropriate for teachers to access. His father was drafted during World War II, and he and his mother were evacuated twice from Stuttgart.

His artwork was created as collage, using hand-painted papers, which he cut and layered to form bright and colourful images.

Carle (Eric) The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first edition, first printing with complete number line 1-5 on copyright p. Then in that box goes several texture tools and several spill proof paint containers with paint and brushes. Soak for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight in a laundry tub or a bucket, add 2 table spoons of laundry detergent and enough water to cover the garment.

It didn’t take long to realize that the pinnacle of Eric Carle’s work was the idea that storytelling and art go hand in hand. We shared the book “The Mixed Up Chameleon” by Eric Carle where the chameleon wanted to be like other animals but after becoming like each one and getting mixed up, decided it was actually great being himself after all. Eric Carle was far more than an author and illustrator of children's books, as I came to appreciate by making this purchase. Carle's illustrations were collages created out of painted tissue paper that accompanied simple and often repeating lines. One set of 2 litres of the colours mentioned in the art materials section on page one, will last for a year. This is a delightful delicious book - full of coloured illustrations and a wonderful discussion about his life. When he was ready to create a character or a scene, he'd draw it out in simple shapes onto tracing paper and then overlay the tracing paper on just the right piece of tissue paper. When the paper has dried separate the painted paper from the newspaper, insert a flat hand between the two pieces of paper and gently separate them.
