About this deal

There is just something about Trista Mateer’s poetry, and art, that is very identifiable and comforting when you are feeling rubbish. It was a short read with beautiful words, but at the same time, it felt like scrolling through someone's poetry-inspired Instagram feed - pretty but easily forgotten. I think it's great that so many people can turn to writing to express their thoughts, heal from their pasts, and fight for social justices.

I particularly enjoyed one of her poems about men writing stories and not capturing history in the way Aphrodite might have liked which left more to the imagination. Using the framework of a conversation, with sections alternating between the perspective of the poet and the goddess herself, Mateer explore issues like: heartbreak, sexuality, trauma, and the restorative power in taking control of your own lore, speaking your truths, and rewriting your origin story.Aphrodite Made Me Do It is an atypical sort of collection; it felt like a needed step away from poetry which makes a bouquet of the trauma and pain of its maker. You will find grace between these pages and a little sadness, too - the kind that makes flowers grow in all of the places you need them most. I received a free ARC of this book, with thanks to the author, Central Avenue Publishing and NetGalley.

It's extremely hard to give a book that talks about homosexuality, feminism and even SA/rape a low rating, but could you imagine how frustrating it is to expect these subjects to be talked about deeply or/and to have a heartbreaking imagery associated with it and to end up having just random thoughts thrown onto the paper, with a writing that neither is polished nor controlled ? Unfortunately they do not have this one as a physical copy, so I'll just have to wait until I can get my own— which I will totally be doing because this book is definitely worth rereading again and again. The poetry itself - especially the parts about rewriting Aphrodite's story far away from the male gaze - was intriguing, but it didn't capture me for long. It actually feels more like an account of things Aphrodite taught the narrator in anecdotal style, which was a strange approach.

With fantastic chemistry between the two protagonists (who I knew I would be rooting for from their first meeting! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I was a little horrified at an earlier review that said it came across as generic feminist poetry as I actually found this to be quite the opposite. Blurb: Bestselling and award-winning author Trista Mateer takes an imaginative approach to self-care in this new poetry and prose collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It . After a poem introducing the author’s voice and relationship to love, she goes on to explain a dream she had in which Aphrodite visited her and asked, “What do you need?

And thank you: for dog-earing pages, for highlighting your favourite lines, for sharing your stories with me, for sharing your time with me. The standout part was Aphrodite without question as it seemed to question deeper topics we tend to shy away from. Bestselling and Goodreads Choice Award winning poet Trista Mateer pulls out some tarot cards and asks for help in her goddess inspired poetry collection, Aphrodite Made Me Do It . She currently lives in a house by the sea in New Jersey; and when she's not wrangling her cat, Honeybun, she stares out at the water and waits for the words to wash ashore.
