And her career is booming: she’s just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she’s appearing at sell-out events.

Following the launch of her latest book Chaste, Samantha is pulled to one side by her manager in crisis mode. And her career is booming: she’s just hit three million followers, her new book Chaste has gone straight to the top of the bestseller lists and she’s appearing at sell-out events. As the trial by social media raises its ugly head, the toxicity starts to spread and Samantha sees the empire she has worked so hard to establish slowly begin to crumble. However, I thought that the revelation of the 'truths' happened far too quickly and some were only skimmed over (the ex and Becky).

It's not often that I can read a story with a VERY unlikeable main character and still enjoy the story. A really interesting, thoughtful, balanced novel about a very current issue in society which I think was handled very sensitively. But then - years since they last spoke - Lisa gets in touch to say that she doesn't remember it that way at all.

The character development was great — Sometimes we see a different side of people when they’re pushed to, or beyond, their limits. It is one of those stories where you will love then hate then pity then hate some characters as the story progresses in the present day but also as the truth emerges over what happened all those years ago. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). IDOL is the story of Samantha Miller, an influencer, a lifestyle guru who has built up a huge number of fans over a career that has reached stratospheric levels. It’s a great, albeit harrowing question: what if it were true that you did something awful to someone, even if you can’t believe it of yourself? This book was clearly trying to be as controversial as possible but I can’t see what it thinks it adds to the issues. Louise's first novel for adults, Almost Love, was published in 2018, followed shortly by The Surface Breaks, her feminist re-imagining of The Little Mermaid.

There’s tension, it’s uncomfortable, you wince, you groan and it’s quite raw at times with some scenes making you gasp in shock. Well written, with interesting (though not always likeable characters) Idol demonstrates the problem of reinventing oneself, and it will make you shudder! Whilst this means that we then get to see more into just how obsessed Sam was with her friend, it makes for a strange and at times infuriating read. I enjoyed every page and when I was forced to put it down I couldn't wait to get back to it as soon as possible - always the sign of a great read.

This is also a book about friendship and envy, and although this book is set in New York and Connecticut, the story throbs with the bitterness of Irish begrudgery. O'Neill continues to push at the murk around contemporary taboos, shining a compassionate and compelling light on what drives our appearance-obsessed society, marking us all as complicit. O’Neill is asking us, gently but persistently: “are people like Sam Miller rotten from the start, and that is what draws them to influencing, or does the influencing rot them from within? IDOL is fresh, glamorous, and surprising, taking an issue we all care about and with a deft twist, recalibrating our position. I did enjoy it, it has some interesting insights into those trials by social media we see all the time - and I read it over a couple of sittings it was gripping.
