About this deal

Kate Swenson is the creator of the blog and Facebook page Finding Cooper’s Voice, which has almost 500,000 followers. In Forever Boy , Kate shares her inspiring journey with honesty and compassion, offering solace and hope to others on this path and illuminating the strength and perseverance of mothers.

This episode 170 is going to be aired for the first time on April 5th, which is the launch date for Forever Boy. Although the world of special education has come so far, it amazes me how much it has stayed the same. One time, she recorded an emotional video that subsequently went viral, leading to TV appearances, but also to a lot of hate being directed at her. Now, Kate shares her inspiring story in this powerful memoir about motherhood and unconditional love.It almost felt like we were doing autism wrong, moving in the wrong direction, bucking the traditional path and dripping bits of color everywhere. In 2013, when the DSM four went to five and Asperger's was cut out and PDD NOS was cut out and everybody was merged together, I think they thought more controversial things like that. There was so many moments that just I can relate so much even the marriage aspect the grief, the dreams, and how the sibling relationship and her raw emotion so relatable. From noticing something different right in the hospital the day of his birth, to feeling at a loss during the toddler years, to having concerns and fears minimized by others for far too long, to fighting for a diagnosis that you know he needs, but you wish he didn’t… Kate’s story is my story, and every Autism parent’s story.

Welcome to the Turn Autism Around podcast for both parents and professionals in the autism world who want to turn things around, be less stressed and lead happier lives. Regardless of whether they end up being right or wrong, the one thing we can’t let them do is destroy our hope. I'm a former special education teacher, and I believe this would be a beneficial read for anyone, but especially for teachers, speech pathologists, etc (those who work with children with autism). I tried to be really respectful of Cooper, and in the beginning again, I didn't know that that many people were seeing my things.

Kate launched Finding Cooper's Voice from her couch while her now 11-year-old son Cooper was being diagnosed with autism. As I wait in the parking lot to pick my twin girls up from ABA therapy, there is no better way to spend my time waiting! I was with Kate and Cooper every step of the way thank you so much for sharing your life the highs and the very lows. You don’t have to be on the same journey as a parent to appreciate this story and the exceptional woman and child behind it.

Now, Kate shares her inspiring story in this powerful memoir about motherhood and unconditional love When Kate Swenson's son Cooper was diagnosed with severe, nonverbal autism, her world stopped. These moms are strong, resilient, brave, kind, and have the ability to find humor and joy even on their darkest days. Plus, can someone show me “severe autism” in the DSM so we can ALL fully comprehend the difference of diagnosing someone with “SEVERE AUTISM” compared to “NONSEVRRE Autism”? When I pictured that spectrum, the one they described to me, I imagined a long line drawn with a thick black sharpie across a white wall down an endless, bright hallway.

And opening up and being honest about our day-to-day struggles and my heartache didn’t come easily to me. Honestly, my friend's kids, I had been around a lot of babies and just a little bit different, a little unique, I like to say. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the perspective of the author in her dedicated quest on Cooper’s behalf.I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255, “Guides Concerning the Use of Testimonials and Endorsements in Advertising. She was honest about her marital difficulties and her trouble relating to other parents who did not understand that her greatest desire was to see Cooper be all that he could be. And so if Lucas gets stimming, like the whole iPad dies and you have to charge it, the noise reduction or volume reduce her app goes off.
